SCHLEMMER’S CIRCLES a tribute to Oskar Schlemmer

with Delaram Rahim

advised by Ani Liu and Krzysztof Wodiczko

Schlemmer’s circle is translated from the drawing of “man as dancer” by Schlemmer. Complementary to “Stabetanz”, which highlights the straight lines of the body and the rigid
inearity of the bones, this exercise focuses on the circular tracks swiped by the body representing the past and the future dictated by our joints. The wearable piece for the
performance is made of welded metal circles that are attached to the body, drawing in space through projected shadows, playing with the ideas of scale and time. Schlemmer’s circle is an exercise of form versus void, action versus feedback, train versus trail.

“Stabetanz” sees human as machine, as object from the modern view, while Schlemmer’s circle sees human as impact and human as phenomenon. The shadows analyze the body in space, and create the choreography of the performance based on its feedback for the body.
